How A Log is Utilized for Custom Veneer

How A Log is Utilized for Custom Veneer

Our team at Gator Millworks approaches our work with precision, intentionality and a deep respect for our materials. When it comes to custom veneer, that means starting at the source: the log.

This approach not only allows us to maximize the yield from every tree, but it also provides our clients with a broader range of aesthetic and functional options. From sleek, uniform veneer strips to bold flitch cuts with dramatic character, we use it all.

From Tree to Sheet: The Custom Veneer Process

How A Log is Utilized for Custom Veneer

The journey from raw timber to finished veneer is one of careful engineering and thoughtful artistry. Wood veneers are created by slicing thin sheets of wood from logs using a variety of cutting methods—rotary, plain-sliced, quarter-sawn or rift-cut—each offering distinct visual and structural characteristics.

Our goal is to work with each log in a way that reveals its natural beauty while optimizing its usability. That means looking at every inch and asking, “How can this piece serve the design?”

Making the Most of Every Quarter

How A Log is Utilized for Custom Veneer

To get the most out of a log, it’s first cut into quarters. This method gives us access to the heart of the wood, where we can extract high-quality, quarter-sawn veneer strips. These strips are known for their straight, linear grain patterns and excellent dimensional stability, making them ideal for architectural panels, cabinetry and other fine millwork applications.

By controlling the slicing process in each quarter, we can reduce waste, improve consistency and ensure a high yield of usable veneer that’s both durable and visually compelling.

Veneer Flitches: Embracing the Flakes

How A Log is Utilized for Custom Veneer

Flitches—sections of the log sliced sequentially—reveal the wood’s story in a way that’s bold, organic and often full of personality. Some of these flitches contain natural “flakes” or figuring, such as the ray fleck patterns commonly found in white oak.

Some designers and clients love these eye-catching details for the depth and authenticity they bring to a space. Others prefer a more consistent, even appearance. Because of our custom veneer capabilities in house, we accommodate both preferences by offering complete flexibility in veneer selection without discarding the parts of the log that don’t fit a specific visual mold.

Each section has a role to play. We don’t waste material; We find purpose in it.

Challenges of Open-Grain Veneers

Working with natural veneer—especially open-grain or reconstructed varieties—requires a careful, controlled finishing process. One common issue that can arise is the appearance of white flecks after coating. These can result from a few different factors:

  • Sanding dust can settle deep in the grain and become visible once the finish dries.
  • Air bubbles may form if the coating begins to dry while air is still escaping from the pores of the wood.
  • Glue residue from earlier in the fabrication process can interfere with the coating and cause uneven coloration.

To avoid these challenges, we follow best practices for surface prep, sanding and sealing. This includes using clean, high-quality sandpaper, maintaining proper dust extraction systems and thoroughly inspecting each piece of veneer before it enters the finish booth. Every detail matters because when the finish goes on, there’s no room for compromise.

A Sustainable, Artistic Approach to Millwork

By utilizing the full log, we reduce waste and extend the value of each tree. This opens up more creative possibilities. Custom veneer offers the look and feel of solid wood with greater efficiency, making it a smart and sustainable solution for high-end millwork.

What sets our work apart isn’t just the quality of the materials, it’s the way we handle them. We believe in honoring the raw material and showcasing its natural beauty, whether that’s through a clean, uniform panel or a bold, character-rich flitch. No two logs are the same—and that’s exactly the point.

Bringing Out the Best in Every Log

Every project we take on is an opportunity to craft something exceptional. And every log that enters our shop holds that potential. By using the entire log, we’re not just being efficient, we’re being thoughtful. We’re ensuring that every piece has a place in the final product.

If you’re looking to create something custom and built to last, we’d love to show you what’s possible with our custom veneer in-house capabilities. Contact us today for more information.
