The Founding of Gator Millworks: A Legacy in the Making
Every company has a starting point. Ours began in 1993 with a simple conversation and a willingness to take a chance. After years in the newspaper business, we made a decision to step into something new. Then, a casual comment to a craftsman turned into a phone call later that night. Within hours, a plan was forming around a kitchen table.
Minimal equipment. A small team. A big vision. That was enough to get started.
Building on Thibodeaux Road
In November of 1994, the first shop opened behind a home on Thibodeaux Road. The building was 30 by 50 and tight on space, but it was ours. The early days were filled with sanding cabinets, sweeping floors and saying yes to every opportunity that came through the door.
The name Gator came from a simple suggestion. And it stuck. What mattered more than the name was the commitment behind it. Quality work. Honest communication. Care for the customer. That foundation shaped everything that followed.
Growing With Purpose
As demand increased in the mid to late 1990s, so did the team. The move from Central to Denham Springs marked the next step forward. What started with five or six people slowly grew to a larger crew producing custom work for homeowners and builders who valued craftsmanship.
Space filled up quickly, buildings were added and equipment expanded. Each season brought new growth and new lessons. Through it all, the focus remained steady. Serve people well. Deliver a product we are proud of.
Looking back, that first leap of faith built more than a business. It built a legacy grounded in people, quality and a belief that hard work creates opportunity.
